Counselor Profile: Kathy Thome, LPC

Your life does not get better by chance.   It gets better by actively challenging and changing that which no longer works.  My own experience in counseling helped me get “unstuck”.  The tried and true methods I had used to cope were no longer helping and were in fact, working against me.  When you are ready, I am here to help you make your own changes.

Deciding to contact a therapist can be difficult and I will do all I can to make your therapy experience as welcoming, accepting and beneficial as possible. I am determined to help you achieve your counseling goals by using your strengths to overcome obstacles.  Even though I am the therapist, I am never the only “expert” in the room.  You know more about yourself than I possibly could.  I will work with you to discover the parts of yourself that will enable you to move forward.  Your sessions will be relaxed and in a soothing office setting. Counseling strategies I employ include, Solution Focused, CBT, ACT, EMDR, REBT, and Internal Family Systems.

My experiences as a high school teacher, coach, and counselor and then my work in private practice have all contributed to the approaches I take in my work with various populations.  I have a particular passion and expertise for working with teenagers as they struggle to define their identities. I founded the first Gay Straight Alliance for high school students while serving as a high school counselor and worked extensively with our suicide awareness/prevention program.  I facilitate a monthly meeting for Survivors of Suicide and Loss Group with the Community for Hope. My work with adults typically involves relationships, grief, anxiety, depression, and stress management.  I collaborate as needed with family members, school personnel, physicians, and my colleagues to provide an optimum level of care that is tailored to your needs.

When things seem out of control, keep in mind that staying positive does not mean that things will turn out OK, it means that YOU will be OK no matter how things turn out.  You can decide how you react to life’s challenges. If you are ready to do so, give me a call!
